The old towns of suburban Denver should be on any tour of Colorado's front range wine country
Arvada to Broomfield to Niwot -- it's not a double play, but a tour of the old towns at the heart of some Denver suburbs that includes interesting wineries, romantic bed and breakfast inns, specialty shopping and fine restuarants.
Old Town Winery has become well-known in Colorado since it opened in Arvada in 1997. Voted the “Best Overall Winery in Colorado” in 1999, Old Town Winery produces a barrel-fermented Chardonnay that is sold as a limited edition with numbered cases and bottles.
Other hand-crafted wines on the card include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc, Zinfandel and two excellent table wines. You can try then all in a charming, antique tasting room. Tasting and tours are free; open Wednesday to Friday 11 to 3, Saturdays 11 to 5.
Old Town Arvada may be off-beat, but it has several square blocks of interesting boutiques, a farmers market and a bakery famous for its large variety of sugar-free desserts
The Dove innin nearby Golden, Colorado, is within walking distance of many attractions including Coors Brewery Tours, Buffalo Bill's Museum, the Railroad Museum and Golden State Canyon State Park. All rooms are non-smoking with private baths. Amenities include telephone, air conditioning and a TV/VCR. A hearty breakfast is served.

Turquoise Mesa Winery is in nearby Broomfield. Owners Tom and Mary Joan Bueb make a variety of quality wines from Colorado grapes, including Chardonnay, Viognier, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, plus a dry white blend. They also host a tasting room at their winery. Weekend wine tasting is by appointment.
Hilltop Guest House and Suites in Broomfield, is larger and more sophisticated than the average bed and breakfast. The Guest House is unique in style and provides European style service, including a full breakfast.

Medivina Winery is on Route 119, north of Boulder in the little town of Niwot.Medovina makes honey wines, known as “mead,” with both a dry and a sweet finish. Considered off-beat by some, these aromatic wines are produced naturally without filtering or added sulfites, They are barrel-aged before bottling, and further aged in the bottle for up to three years.
