Germany's only "deep-sea island" has much to offer: its well-known red sandstone formations, including the "Lange Anna", the symbol of Helgoland; plenty of fresh wind and unparalleled clean air; any number of rare sea birds; and a fully-fledged seal colony. But let's not forget the island's most famous inhabitant, the children's author and lyricist James Kross, who wrote more than 160 books, which have been translated into 40 languages.
Kross fans coming to Helgoland on holiday can pursue their interest in the author, who died in 1997, in two very different ways. On the one hand there is the Helgoland Museum, which regularly stages readings and small theatrical productions of Kross's work. And on the other hand there's the energetic alternative: taking sailing lessons in the school run by Hauke Kross, the author's nephew. The latter teaches beginners and advanced students, and familiarises them with the special skills required when sailing on the high seas.
