The Altmark is situated between Hamburg, Hannover and Berlin, and is the oldest part of the historic Brandenburg Marches. In this romantic countryside, spring is in the air - even in autumn. So it's just the place to get married in traditional style. The inventive locals have come up with a very special idea for their nuptial visitors. At Lake Arend there is a floating registry office - on board the "Queen Arendsee", an old passenger ship. Not far from Lake Arend lies Salzwedel. Its townscape is characterised by old half-timbered houses and by St. Mary's Church, about whose crooked tower a wonderfully creepy story is told. Though situated on the old salt route, Salzwedel actually has a sweet speciality: "Salzwedel tree cake". The shape of this cake does not come from the tin it is baked in, instead it grows outwards in all directions, like a tree.
