Like a river, the Schlei winds its way from the town of Schleswig to the Baltic coast, 40 kilometres away. However it is not in fact a river, but a coastal inlet. The water is not particularly deep so there are few waves, and the wind blows steadily, making this ideal sailing territory for those who prefers leisure to hard work. The Schlei and its shores are also widely regarded as being some of the most beautiful countryside in Schleswig-Holstein.
The nature centre in Maasholm, near the mouth of the Schlei, gives you a chance to immerse yourself in the wonderful nature of this region. Here you will be introduced to the flora and fauna of the entire Baltic area. When the pupils at Louisenlund Castle introduce themselves, on the other hand, it can take quite a long time, because most of them have long aristocratic titles. The posh boarding school on the banks of the Schlei is a very attractive place to come on an outing; the castle was in fact built in the days when the Danish king still ruled here.
Good food is also available on the Schlei, one of the top addresses for this being the "Schlie-Krog" in Sieseby which can look back on a long tradition.
