For a long time, jam-filled doughnuts, meat balls and curried sausages were the type of dish that the capital, Berlin, was famous for. Needless to say, true gourmets were not particularly impressed. But in the meantime, Berlin has made a new name for itself in culinary circles with a number of one-star restaurants. One of the city's top chefs is Wolfgang Nageler, of the restaurant Quadriga. Meanwhile, in Hamburg, star cook Joseph Viehauser has a special treat for the eccentric. Adventure-hungry visitors can take to the skies with him in a hot-air balloon. Floating above the Hanseatic town, the chef then proceeds to conjure up exquisite dishes. This is rather an exclusive pleasure seeing that, aside from the cook and the balloon's pilot, there's just enough room for two guest (who need to have a head for heights). Numerous gourmet restaurants have made the region of Baden a popular destination for epicures too. In the heart of the old town centre of Freiburg lies the hotel Zum Roten Boren, thought to be the oldest inn in Germany. The present owner can proudly point to a certified ancestry of 50 generations of innkeepers.
