The Rhine is as integral a part of Dusseldorf as the dark beer served in the pubs of its old city. It's not only the old parts of the city that lie along the banks of the mighty river, but also the most recent attractions of its urban developmental - among them, the "media port". Goods are no longer transhipped in the former trading port; instead it offers a home to art and culture, media companies and agencies. Many renowned architects have left their mark on it, but great artists such as Jurg Immendorf also have their studios here.
We will be looking at where this outstanding painter works, whose paintings can be admired even in China. The Dusseldorf district of Oberkassel on the left-hand bank of the Rhine has also become a meeting place for artists. Guided tours through Oberkassel's art scene not only give visitors a glimpse of the artists' works, but also an impression of how they live. "Roncalli's Apollo Variety Theatre" is an experience of a very different kind. Clowns, acrobats and comedians entertain their audiences night after night, with a programme that includes both thoughtful elements and heavy slapstick.
