Our final destination in this week's program takes us into an area which was formerly only known for steel and coal. However, with the decline of these industries in the late 20th century, the 'Pot' as the Ruhr area is called, has had to redefine itself. Today, tourism plays an increasingly important role in the Ruhr. However, visitors still want to see those aspects of the mining industry that ultimately made Germany into an industrial powerhouse.
The Mining Museum was created in Bochum to give people an idea of what life was like for the miners deep under the surface of the earth. An elevator transports visitors into the world of tunnels, shafts, and coal transport machines. For those who would rather reach for the stars, there is the Space Museum. Internationally renowned astronomer, Heinz Kaminski, opens the world of space travel and astronomy to his visitors. In the Bochum Planetarium, a multimedia show featuring astral projections in the planetarium's huge dome, takes visitors on a voyage through the heavens.
