When the Hanseatic League was still in its infancy, Soest was already a member of that powerful organisation of towns and trading companies; because it was not only ports that joined forces back in the 12th century. Efficient trading throughout Europe also called for inland transport routes, and so a town like Soest was a welcome partner.

Back then, Soest was one of the most important places in Westphalia, and lay on the Hellweg, an ancient trade route between the east and the west. The citizens of Soest didn't only trade with the other members of the Hansa, however, they also exported their progressive town charter, which was then adopted by many towns right up to Scandinavia, and even in the "Queen of the Hansa", Lubeck.

Today, Soest's former importance and past affluence is still readily apparent, its large number of impressive churches being just one sign of this. But since you cannot survive on old architecture alone, Westphalia's oldest inn has also been preserved here. Travellers have been fed here ever since 1304, though of course nowadays it offers modern cuisine mainly based on local produce.
