The Rhine is more than just a place where carnival is celebrated, a fact that is demonstrated more obviously in Dusseldorf than anywhere else. The metropolis on the Rhine is famous as a city of art, fashion and trade fairs. And Dusseldorf's Kunigsallee, fondly known by the locals as the 'K', is one of the most stylish shopping promenades in Germany. Dusseldorf also has quite a bit to offer in the way of art and culture: the North Rhine-Westphalia Art Collection includes masterpieces by Picasso and Kandinsky, right through to Beuys.
Benrath Castle is a very special work of art in itself. Built in the 18th century, as a summer residence for Elector Carl Theodore, everything here still seems to be just the way it was 200 years ago, from the architecture right through to the furnishings. On the other hand, visitors of the Aquazoo will experience quite a different world. Amidst tropical plants and exotic animals, the South African jungle seems to have found a home in the metropolis on the Rhine. By night, everyone in Dusseldorf meets up in the bars of the old city. Some 260 breweries and pubs combine to form the world's longest bar.
