If you really want to get to know a German city, visit its marketplace. Here is where economic life centered for hundreds of years, and standing among the stalls and the crowds will give you a unique feeling for the place and its people. Destination Germany has visited two of the country's markets richest in tradition, the Isemarkt in Hamburg and Munich's Viktualienmarkt. The sellers' days start long before dawn, when the wholesale markets open. They choose their wares from among the bewildering variety of fish, flowers and vegetables, and and then bring everything back to their stalls.
By the time the first customers arrive, the market seller's working day is already several hours old. But despite the tough schedule, most people working in the markets love their profession because it gives them real human contact. Whoever wants to just rush out and shop quickly, they say, would be better off in a supermarket.
