Greifswald and its fishermen, Germany

When the ports on the North and Baltic Sea were bustling with activity in the Middle Ages, when trade was flourishing and the influence of the Hanseatic League was making itself felt further and further afield, a style of architecture emerged which is today known as Backsteingotik (Gothic brick architecture).

Churches and patrician houses, office buildings and warehouses rose upwards brick by brick, elaborately embellished and hence very prestigious. People wanted to show who they were. Greifswald on the Baltic coast of Mecklenburg-West Pomerania was also one of the rich Hanseatic towns, and its carefully restored townscape still bears witness to the period.

But there are other ways of travelling back into the past here, too: a visit to the fishing village Wiek, for instance. Here Baltic fishermen still lead a life that hardly differs from that of their grandfathers.
