Wandering through the old town of Celle, in Lower Saxony, it doesn't take much imagination to travel back through time. The historic town centre, with its winding alleys and half-timbered houses, has been perfectly preserved. But many interesting things can be found inside the houses, too. Just opposite the castle, the museum in the Bormann House informs visitors about the evolution of the historical town centre.
Another key attraction for visitors is the Huth coffee roasting house, where fresh coffee is still roasted every day - just the way it has been for 150 years. The interior decorations and the charming, dated "colonial produce" are also authentic in style.
Outside the gates of Celle, in the little village of Bargfeld, the Arno Schmidt House is dedicated to the author of that name. Along with Heinrich Boll, Schmidt is regarded as one of the principal writers of German post-war literature. Letters, personal belongings, photographs and documents paint a vivid picture of Schmidt's life and work.
In the evening, numerous little restaurants offer visitors a chance to end an active day in restful comfort, in "Kollner's Landhaus", for instance, which is renowned for its cuisine.
