According to legend, it was a rosebush that prompted Louis the Pious to establish the town of Hildesheim and build its impressive cathedral. Today, the rose has become the symbol of this town and at the same time it acts as a guide for visitors. You can, in fact, walk through Hildesheim on roses. Over a length of some five kilometres, they have been let into the asphalt to serve as signposts, leading you to the many sights of the little town.
One of these is, of course, the cathedral, where the legendary rosebush, now over a thousand years old, to which Hildesheim owes its existence, can still be seen today. The Road of Roses will also take you to the "Romer-Pelizoer Museum" in which you can admire some of the world's most important Egyptian artefacts. A visit to the nearby town of Hameln is quite literally like walking into a fairy tale. Everywhere in the world, grandmothers tell their grandchildren the story of the famous Pied Piper of Hamelin, and so it is hardly surprising that the town is still pervaded by the legend. In summer, the story of the well-known rat-catcher is put on as an open-air play on the terraces of the Wedding House in the heart of the old town.
