The Waldecker Land, a famous holiday region in Northern Hesse, is just ideal for holidays with the family. And this also means "farmyard holidays". Adults and children alike can recuperate here, far from the noise of traffic and hectic urban life. Younger visitors, in particular, soon begin to blossom after spending a few days feeding cows and driving a tractor.
For many children, sitting on a tractor, or - in the case of very young visitors - on the farmer's lap as he steers, has been their first impression of what it is like to drive a car. And that's not only true of boys. Television is out; instead the Kellerwald nature information centre offers all kinds of fun and information about the countryside and the animal kingdom.
But if, even in the middle of Hessian nature, you don't want to do without some cultural fare as well, you could visit the palace in Bad Arolsen. A huge baroque structure along the lines of Versailles, entirely in keeping with the craving for status of the then Prince of Waldeck and Pyrmont, and totally oversized for this tranquil region.
