The little town of Bad Kreuznach lies on the banks of the Nahe river, shortly before the river joins the Rhine at Bingen. The climate here in the Nahe valley is mild, which allows good wines to flourish and helps spa visitors to relax. The spa facilities of Bad Kreuznach are first-class, with offers ranging from therapeutic gymnastics to up-to-date wellness programmes.
Even the Romans used to come here for health cures in their time, and later the nobility and wealthy burghers followed in their footsteps, also taking the opportunity to have their portraits made by members of Bad Kreuznach's Cauer family of sculptors. These sculptures are now on display in the Schlosspark Museum. The Kauzenburg, dating back to the year 1200, rises above the picturesque health resort. Having been destroyed in the 17th century, this castle was done up again in 1972 and now its old walls draw many visitors, one of the main attractions being its castle restaurant.
