The Bottcherstraoe in Bremen is the perfect starting point for anyone coming to this town on the Weser for the first time. Once you have experienced this charming street in the heart of the old city, you will always enjoy returning to it. Destination Germany has taken a look around and visited one of the people who live on the road. Just round the corner from the Bottcherstraoe lies "St. Jacob's Pack House", the last of the old Bremen warehouses. In the heyday of overseas trading, barrels and sacks of coffee were stored here; today it houses a multimedia exhibition about the history of the town.
The motto of the exhibition is "ZeitRaum" - "time-space" - and it gives visitors an opportunity to slip into the role of a captain in Bremen's merchant fleet, or get a vivid impression of the dreadful night-time bombardment during the Second World War. Immediately outside the old city, contemporary art has made a home for itself on a narrow island in the Weser. The Weserburg New Museum regards itself as a collectors' museum, meaning that rather than putting on thematic exhibitions or displaying the works of specific artists, it shows complete collections that have been put together over a period of years or decades.
