The history of Wittenberg is inseparable with that of Martin Luther. It was here on the bank of the River Elbe that the great reformer wrote his 95 Propositions. Even today, Luther's spirit hangs over the city. We enjoy a tour of the city, lead by a medieval costumed guide. We walk across the market place, past a monument dedicated to the great Protestant reformer, Melanchthon, to the castle church upon whose door Luther nailed his historic propositions.
The grave sites of both Luther and Melanchthon are located inside this impressive late Gothic structure. Only a few steps from the church is our next stop, the house in which Luther lived from 1508 to 1546. It was here that he worked on his translations and theses, and married his wife, Katharina von Bora. Finally, we visit the Hundertwasser-Schule, one of the Austrian artist's last constructions and one of Wittenberg's most modern tourist attractions.
