Mecklenburg's lake district is known as the "land of the thousand lakes". Large parts of the wooded countryside belong to the Moritz National Park. Being quite sparsely populated, the park still offers plenty of untouched nature. The very special charm of Moritz National Park comes from its many lakes and rivers, which are an ideal habitat for numerous plants and animals that have become quite rare. We've been out exploring the region with the national park's guide, to track down some of its wildlife for you.
Every year in autumn, you will encounter cranes here. They congregate by a lake with the strange name of Spukloch (Spook's Hole) before setting off on their long journey to the south of Europe where they spend the winter.
