On the Moselle river, a life without wine is unthinkable. No slope is too steep for the precious vines, no village too small for a boisterous wine festival. 2000 years ago, the Romans recognised the strategic advantages of the hills above the Moselle, and put them to good use. No other region north of Italy offers such an abundance of relics from antiquity as the Moselle valley.
The Roman Villa Urbana at Longuich, and the Roman wine ship in Neumagen-Drohn are just two examples; and every year the town of Piesport celebrates a Roman wine-pressing festival. The climax of this is the pressing of the grapes in the original Roman style, crushing them under bare feet. The best way to learn how wine is grown and processed on the Moselle nowadays, is to spend your holidays on a wine-growing estate.
Weingut Meisheimer offers a wonderful opportunity for relaxing, and learning a lot into the bargain. On guided walks through the vineyards you can sample the wines and find out all about ecological viniculture too. The grand finale is, of course, a visit to the historic wine cellars.
