Off the North Sea coast of Schleswig Holstein lie the remnants of a sunken world. Fertile marshlands once stretched out here, and in the midst of them: the legendary port of Rungholt. The sea has engulfed almost everything, leaving behind the mudflats, known as the Wattenmeer, with their islands and halligs. Fohr and Amrum lie just a few miles south of Sylt, the largest and most famous of the North Frisian islands, but are comparatively quiet and not nearly as stylish.
On the other hand, that means you can enjoy the special atmosphere of the Wattenmeer undisturbed here, including the fresh sea air and the culinary specialities. Fohr offers green meadows and the Frisian Museum with its vivid portrait of what life was once like for the island's inhabitants. On the seaward side of the island lies Amrum, visible from afar thanks to its characteristic red-and-white lighthouse.
One of Amrum's most striking features is Kniepsand, the widest beach in Europe. Sylt, too, the queen of the North Frisian islands, offers summer visitors everything that you expect of a seaside holiday. But a day on the beach makes you hungry, and that's where Jorgen Gosch's fish snack bar comes into the picture. Its modest name is deceptive, because the former sales tray business has long become a high-class establishment which does a roaring trade.
