The little town of Quedlinburg in Saxony-Anhalt is one of the first travel destinations in Germany. Year after year, its well-preserved historical townscape forms the fitting backdrop for the "Emperor's Spring", a spectacular costume pageant that has been attracting visitors since the Middle Ages. The period celebrated by this event is the rise of Quedlinburg to become a focus of Central European power politics, under Henry I, the Duke of Saxony who was elected the first German king, and his son Otto, known as "the Great", who in his day became the Emperor of the German Reich.

Numerous figures from the far-off 10th century come back to life at the "Emperor's Spring", from the fire-eater to the first abbess of the German Reich. An educational excursion into the past, but also a very present-day pleasure. Just a few steps through the old city and a huge leap in time, bring you to the painter and Bauhaus teacher Lyonel Feininger. A remarkable collection of Feininger's graphics, etchings and watercolours can be admired in the gallery bearing his name. They were collected in Quedlinburg by a close friend of the distinguished artist, and preserved here after Feininger's emigration in 1937.
