Schleswig Holstein - the land between the seas, the land of the wind, the land of the mills. Before the advent of industrialisation, over 1000 mills were in service in Germany's northernmost state - driven only by wind and water. Today, about 100 of these old mills have been preserved. One of the most beautiful is the Dutch-style mill "Sventana" in Ascheberg. A group of private owners renovated this gem in 20 years of painstaking work.
Today its huge sails once again turn majestically in the wind, and the grinding gear and interior furnishings are also in perfect condition and can be viewed by the public. Schaalby is home to one of the country's oldest watermills. The neighbouring monastery built the mill back in 1464. The countless belts which harness the power of the six-tonne millwheel for a wide range of tools and drives are impressive even today. In Norby, near Rieseby, the wheels have ceased to turn. The mill "Anna" has been converted into a museum. On three storeys, visitors can learn about the story of a village community - from the old arts of the craftsmen to the life that went on around the mill.
