Our destination is literally something to get your teeth into. We decided to let our taste buds do the walking through the northern part of Germany. Our tour begins in the Baltic Sea town of Heiligenhafen, where people still take the term freshly caught fish very seriously. The days catch are sold right off the cutters at the docks, and land on the tables of traditionally successful restaurants such as the Alten Salzspeicher (the old salt storehouse).
Our next stop is in Hamburg, and Landhaus Scherrer. This restaurant is not only popular because of its lovely location near the city park, but also because of its homey atmosphere and, most importantly, excellent cuisine. We move on to something far removed from the gastronomic norm by first, visiting a restaurant set in what was once the jail at Castle Rantzau, in Barmstedt, and then, setting sail on a ketch, the J.R. Tolkien, for dinner on the sea.
