The Volcanic Eifel really is amazing: today its views are dominated by sprawling mountains and idyllic lakes, but long ago the region used to be quite a hot spot, with streams of lava gushing out of the bowels of the earth. In those primeval days, the peaceful lakes you'll find all over the region were volcanic chimneys spewing molten rock.
It wasn't until long after the volcanoes became extinct that their craters filled up with water, forming the typical circular lakes of this region, known as "maars". Nowadays you can review the history of Earth and take a wonderful journey through time - not in a time machine but, for example, in a jeep.
On such a geological safari, you will be accompanied up hill and down dale by an experienced naturalist, to visit many a natural spectacle such as the Nohn waterfall. Over 480 volcanoes still exist in the Eifel, and some of them can even be ascended on foot or by car.
