Throughout Middle-Europe, the expansion of the mighty Roman empire greatly influenced the development of entire regions. In the southern and western parts of Germany, they established towns, set up army camps, built roads, and in general attempted to impose the Roman way of life on the territories under their control.
Though time has erased much of what the Romans created, traces of their civilization do exist in abundance in a number of places. For example, we visit the city of Trier, which was one of the most important and beautiful cities in the Roman empire during the 2nd and 3rd centuries after Christ's death.
We have a look at the mighty Porta Nigra, a remnant of a defensive fortification that was built with a great deal of effort and engineering skill by the Romans, and which has since rightfully become the symbol for Trier. Another city rich in Roman artifacts is Cologne. We have a look at some of the wonderful exhibits in the Roman-German Museum there. Our last stop on the trail of the Romans in Germany takes us to the city of Xanten. In the city's Archeologic Park, historians and archeologists are in the process of reconstructing an authentic Roman settlement.
