When one pictures the great courses of Ireland, it's usually a windswept links course set against the stunning backdrop of heather-clad hills and a scenic peninsula.
Then there's the Kildare Hotel and Country Club. Nestled on 330 acres of Kildare countryside just west of Dublin, the 'K' Club has broken the mould.
Opened in 1991, the Arnold Palmer layout is Ireland's most luxurious golf facility. This is where 007 comes to relax: screen Bonds Sean Connery and Pierce Brosnan are known to enjoy golfing and fishing here.
It was somewhat audacious for the club to bid for the 1993 and 1997 Ryder Cups (before even a sod was turned) but that confidence was justified with the awarding of the 2005 Cup - becoming only the second venue in Europe outside Britain to receive the honor of holding golf's most
The 'K' Club opened one day after Jack Nicklaus baptized his first Irish course at Mount Juliet in County Kilkenny. Local legend has it that the Golden Bear once flew over the course on his way back to Dublin. "Very nice," he observed. Then, noting Palmer's reputation for only minor involvement in the design of his courses, reportedly added, "Has Arnold seen it?"
Palmer's parkland layout is devoid of the characteristics common in Irish golf. The fairways and greens are perfectly manicured, the bunkers are shallow, and there is little of the club-tangling rough. The 'K' Club is simply an American course, clearly bearing the imprint of an architect more enamoured of Augusta (where he won four green jackets) than Royal Troon (where he won a British Open).
Yet Palmer has woven a superb test, littered with lakes, ponds, streams and a mile's worth of the River Liffey, ensuring that any attempt to play the staple shot of links golf - the bump and run - will require a snorkel and flippers. The 'K' Club also has what are collectively the three most daunting closing holes in Ireland.
Greens fees at the 'K' Club are $70 for residents of the hotel and $110 for non-residents. For reservations call +353 1 6017300. Or visit their website at www.kclub.ie.
