The very lifeblood of Los Angeles’heritage flows through Olvera Street, the founding site of Los Angeles and home to the El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historic Monument. Named to honor Augustin Olvera, the first county judge of Los Angeles in 1877, the street was eventually converted into a colorful Mexican marketplace in 1930.
Ever since then, people have flocked there to stroll the brick promenade, shop for wares and souvenirs to their hearts’ content, or savor authentic Mexican food at any of the area’s excellent restaurant. And more often than not, fiestas and festivals - from Mardi Gras’ "Fat Tuesday" to Cinco de Mayo to Summer JazzNfill the air with the sounds of celebration year round.
