However, it is not only these two qualities which make them special: a great display of human resources, leisure and free time, the quality of facilities and their nearness to Europe are their winning streaks. So much so that every year hundreds of tourists, especially Germans, choose the Balearics as their holiday destination. They look for sun and beach and now they can also enjoy the best golf. During the last few years, this sport, originally restricted to the well-off classes, has now become very popular. First, in the United States and now in Europe. That is why, the main tourist destinations, which are aware of the demand, incorporate golf more and more as a way to attract tourists. There are 21 golf courses on the Balearic Islands, as well as hotels and establishments, which have made this sport their living. Most of the courses are situated in Mallorca –18 of the 21 and the rest are spread out between Ibiza and Menorca, although all of them have the beauty of their surroundings in common.
Son Vida Golf is the first golf course of the Balearic Islands. It has a pleasant run thanks to its hillocks and abundant vegetation. In 1990 and 1994, this course played host to the Balearic Open Golf Championship, which Severiano Ballesteros and Barry Lane won. On the other hand, the course also has exclusive accommodation in the Castillo Hotel Son Vida and it also caters for players’ transfers in minibuses.
Another of the usual great playing circuits is Golf Santa Ponça. It is located at 18 kms from Palma and is the largest golf course in Mallorca. Hole 10 must be highlighted for its length –590 metres- one of the longest in the world, and for its difficulty. This is the PGA’s favourite course in Mallorca when it comes to holding professional tournaments.
The Pula golf course is the last of our classics and one of the favourites in Europe for holding international championships. The course gets is name from the estate on which it is located and it provides accommodation for those golf players who not only want to enjoy the sun, but also all the comforts of the area. The price for an overnight stay includes green fees.
The Real Golf of Bendinat is a beautiful course which is laid out in a valley looking out to the sea. It is a good start for less skilled golf fans, as it is short and has steep slopes. Also in Mallorca, Son Antem Este, and in Ibiza, the Club Roca Llisa are ideal for beginners who want to learn on simple and fun courses.
Situated at 10 kms from Palma, the Son Termens golf course is a space that has been totally integrated into the natural environment surrounding it. In fact, it is considered to be the most ecological course on the island. Its 18 holes are located in beautiful mountain scenery, you advance through slopes and bunkers which require great skill and concentration.
If you are an intermediate level player, or the group is large and skill varied, there are intermediate level golf courses which will be most people’s delight. This is the case of Son Parc of Menorca, a golf course going through an expansion phase. It has few slopes and a meticulous layout, characterised by the design of its bunkers, the presence of artificial lakes and difficulties on the greens.
Moreover, the Balareic Golf Committee organises numerous tournaments throughout the year: the Polish Cup, the Golf Week in May, the APG Balearic individual championship or the S.A.R. Juan de Borbón Trophy, and others. A wide range of tourist offers that makes the Balearic Islands a holiday paradise.
