Madeira -- Honeymoon Island Paradise
Peaks of stark mountains plunge straight down
to the sea, and lush, fertile valleys sprawl across the flowering
island of Madeira. It's pampered climate and extravagant beauty
have made this tropical place one of the oldest European vacation
destinations. The island can be reached only by air, and its new
airport was dedicated in September of 2000.
Artists, honeymooners and other romantics come
to appreciate to 'Portugal's Hawaiian Island, from two distinct
perspectives: first from Funchal Harbor and then from Monte, the
hill above Funchal, the island's colorful capital city. From the
heights, couples love to return to Funchal in style, snuggling up
in a wicker toboggan escorted by two islanders.
The legendary and luxurious Reid's hotel brings
a touch of Victorian Britain to Funchal. It has hosted such famous
figures as Edward VII and Winston Churchill. This regal holiday
lodging is within walking distance of the Old City, where international
travelers flock to find tapestries and lace for which Madeira is
famous. Other shopping treasurers are regional handicraft, wickerwork,
honey cake, fennel and eucalyptus drops, and tropical fruits and
flowers. Traveling with a non-shopper who would rather be out on
the greens is no problem. Madeira's golf courses offer plenty of
challenge with breathtaking views of the island and the blue Atlantic
Ocean.
Adventure travelers have plenty to explore on
the island. Funchal's museums, churches, and gardens are a good
start, not to mention coastal and highland villages for bicycle
touring and backpacking. Spectacular scenery is visible frequently
from the road and from vantage points set on the island's highest
peaks and other beautiful locations. The University of Madeira and
the Museu Municipal do Funchal (Natural History) provide walking
tours, plus virtual tours of the aquarium and museum. The Botanical
Gardens invite leisurely romantic strolls, leaving lovers intoxicated
in the Orchid House.
