Once upon an ancient time lived a lovely dark-haired
Princess, Teresa, and her father, King Alfonso, in a vast, green
kingdom by a warm, blue ocean. The King had long desired to add
to his kingdom the favored lands of northern Iberia, but to do so
meant defeating the mighty Moors who inhabited the land. After much
thought, King Alfonso decided to enlist the assistance of the faithful
French Crusaders, led by a handsome and brave nobleman, Henry of
Burgandy.
Sir Burgandy roused his Crusaders and engaged
the mighty Moors in battle. He suffered many losses, but Sir Burgandy
prevailed and northern Iberia was finally wrested from the Moors
once and for all.
King Alfonso, proud and pleased of his conquest,
rewarded the French nobleman Henry of Burgundy with the hand of
his lovely daughter, Princess Teresa. As was his generous custom,
a gift of land would be offered as part of her marriage dowry. King
Alfonso selected Portucale, a small country in his kingdom to which
the city of Braga belonged; and Princess Teresa and Sir Henry wed
and ruled there together in a grand castle.
Soon enough, Princess Teresa gave birth to their
son, and he was named Dom Afonso Henrique. Like his father, Dom
Afonso grew up to become a brave and loyal soldier and leader. And
so it came to pass that nearly 50 years after Sir Henry of Burgandy
was given Portucale, Teresa's son broke ranks with the nobles of
Leon and Castile, and crowned himself King of the new kingdom of
Portugal.
