An 18th-Century Manor Begins Romance
in Beautiful Braga
Close to one of Portugals most photographed sites
is Castelo do Bom Jesus, set in woods high above Portugal's city
of Braga on the summit of Monte Bom Jesus. At the beginning of the
18th century, the Archbishop of Braga ordered an imposing
stairway of granite and white alabaster built from the town to the
church, now a pilgrimage site. Under Swiss architect Ernest Karrody,
Castelo do Bom Jesus was modernized in the early 20th
century. More recently it was refurbished and adapted to create
the richly romantaic hotel it is today.
This magnificent manor is surrounded by a romantic
park, with trees, lakes, and fountains. Peacocks strut in the gardens
but are silent at night. Its elevated location affords guests lovely
panoramic views. Guests also enjoy a heated swimming pool, restful
lounges, elegant dining room and bar.
Guests can easily travel to Porto, about an hour
away, and to the commercial corridor between the two cities where
most of Portugals industrial wealth is created.
