Portugal's Wedding City is This Honeymoon Manor's
Romantic Back Yard
Since 1282, Obidos has been a traditional wedding
gift of Portuguese kings to their queens for centuries. In 1444
Portugal's King Alfonso V – then 10 years old – wedded his eight-year-old
cousin, Isabella in a medieval wedding chapel in the central square
of the town. Obidos, not surprisingly, is known by the Portuguese
as 'the Wedding City', a preferred location of traditional wedding
proposals, wedding ceremonies and wedding receptions.
'Obidos House' honeymoons visitors in secluded
surroundings just a romantic stroll from the walled hilltop town
of Obidos, and Portugal's attractive fishing towns of Nazare and
Peniche – famed for their many seafood restaurants – are a pleasant
drive away. Horseback riding and golf are also nearby. The Casa,
constructed in 1889, is surrounded by a newly replanted garden with
many fruit and specimen trees. A natural fence of trained quince
plants provides plenty of Portuguese ‘marmalada’, served with cheese.
Near the garden pergola is a cactus garden; and in the garden guests
enjoy a pool, an asphalt tennis court, and a barbecue area. Families
and seniors enjoy the lounge, dining room, game room with a pool
table.
Obidos Serenades Newlyweds and Adventure Travelers
in Autumn
The manor's estate is behind the imposing church
of Senhor da Pedra; and the buildings surrounding this church are
good restaurants. Take the footpath from Casa de Obidos to explore
this romantic town. Active and adventurous travelers should walk
around the town walls. The fish market does brisk business most
mornings near the gates to the town, and in October, a festival
of romantic ancient music serenades the town.
The hosts of Casa d'Obidos serve a very substantial
breakfast by Portuguese standards. Even the most traditional English
– expecting bacon, eggs, sausage, fried bread, and black puddings
– will find it a taste of home!
The manor offers double and single room accommodations
as well as a 4-person cottage and a two person studio. Rates year
round are 16,000 escudos per night for single room; 18,000 for double
and studio, and 36,000 for the cottage. Breakfast for two and all
taxes are included for all facilities except the cottage, which
is rented as a self-catering facility.
