Honeymoon Royally in the Traditional 'Wedding
City' of Portugal
Castelo Pousada reigns over the lovely town of
Obidos -- the walled 'Wedding City' of Portugal. Castelo was the
first of many national monuments to be adapted and restored in Portugal,
and it is itself an historical monument of national importance.
Obidos is a heart-stopping medieval village, revered
for its typical white houses with blue trim, flowered windows, narrow
streets, and beautiful stone-paved steps. Its major tourist attractions
are the churches and pillory in the village, the Village Museum,
Malhoa Museum, and the nearby lagoon. Adventure travelers explore
Peniche and Alcobaca a short drive away.
Castelo's visitors wine and dine amid rich royal
finery on asparagus with smoked ham appetizers, Dover sole fillets
with butter sauce or road kid with herbs and giblets rice entrees,
and rich egg sugar roll desserts.
